Ascension is Founded
The Church is Born
The date is December 7, 1869. Martinus and Bertha Anderson are busily preparing for guests - for today is truly a big day at their log home in Shawano County. Reverend Homme is coming all the way from Winchester to conduct a worship service for this small group of Norwegian settlers who are so hungry for the word of God. So began the first flicker of hope for the birth of a Lutheran Church in our community. Since the early 1800's many people from Norway had been coming into Shawano County. Some had originally settled in Winchester, but later had pulled up stakes and headed north to the towns of Maine, Navarino, Waukechon and Lessor.
Today:
Modern Influences, Traditional Heart
Today, Ascension is a combination of old-meets-new. We host contemporary services incorporating hymns and Lutheran traditions every Sunday. We offer Bible Studies for adults several times each week. For the youth we offer Sunday School on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings as well as Confirmation classes. Ascension hosts a community Vacation Bible School for the youth during the summer.

Throughout the year we host a few special worship services like Lenten Services, a Polka Service, a Deer hunters/Thanksgiving Service and a Lesson and Carols Service. Some special occasions we celebrate include an annual Fish Fry in the spring, Drive Your Tractor to Church in the summer as well as meal & fellowship opportunities every Sunday after worship.

The building has received updates, with solar panels allowing us to stay green and be more economical. We are currently working on raising funds to resurface our parking lot.
